Task statuses and stages

Use task statuses and stages to quickly understand a task's progress and prioritize your work.

In Joy, a task is something that you need to do, such as reading a FlexDoc or viewing a file.

A task displaying a document called Employee Travel Policies. A banner above the document asks Do you want to mark this task as complete beside a Mark as Complete button.

Each task has a status and a stage so that you can effectively prioritize and manage your work.

Task statuses

Every task will either have an Open or Closed status.

A panel showing the Overview tab for a task. An arrow points to the status that says "Open".

Tasks with an Open status are incomplete (you or the user assigned the task still needs to do something), while Closed tasks are complete. You can see a task’s status by viewing it.

To see a task that’s assigned to you, click the More Actions icon. More Actions icon, then About. To view a task assigned to someone else, simply click the task.

Task stages

Tasks will progress through different stages. These may include the following:

  • Not started: A task that you haven’t started yet.

  • In progress: A task you’ve started working on.

  • Warning: A task that is due soon. A task typically enters the Warning stage 7 days before its due date, but the person who assigned the task can change this.

  • Overdue: A task that’s past its due date.

  • Complete: A task you finished or one that was manually closed. A task in the Complete stage will have its status automatically changed to Closed.

When you manually close a task, its stage shows as Complete.

On the Tasks page, your tasks display in a Kanban view, which organizes them in sections based on their stage. This organization makes it easy to see what you need to do at a glance.

The Tasks page with the My tasks tab selected. Tasks are organized into columns labeled Not Started, In Progress, Warning, Overdue, and Completed.

You’ll see these same stages on each tab of the Tasks page and when you view a task.
